Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Books and Pamphlets in the Library: Arranged According to Subjects and Authors This system has been very widely adopted in America and in this country, so far as I am aware, in the following institutions: Manchester Free Reference Library, National Library of Ireland, Literary and Philosophical Society's Library, newcastle-on-tyne; whilst a modified decimal system has been recently introduced into the Library of the Owens College. A few years ago, a catalogue of the ashton-under-lyne Free Library was printed, in which Dewey's main divisions were adopted; but it is believed that the present catalogue is the first published in this country in which the method has been fully carried out. It would be out of place here to enter'upon a discussion of the merits of the system; suffice it to say that the practical experience of the past five years has fully justified its adoption.
