Review Text

Meet James Macintosh Qwilleran, once globetrotting crime writer for major newspapers Down Below (as residents of Alaska call all states except their own), and now author of 'Straight from the Qwill Pen' in the Moose County local rag. Journalistic quill at the ready, Qwill answers a cry for help from friends Lori and Nick who have recently opened the Nutcracker Inn up at Black Creek. Lori, it turns out, has been feeling uncomfortable of late, sensing some kind of bad vibes, or as she puts it, a 'dark cloud' hanging over their newly refurbished hotel. Qwill sets off to stay at the Nutcracker, in the company, of course, of his two Siamese cats, because, like everyone else in this story, our columnist is a cat lover extraordinaire, not the least in his faith in the mystic muse of a moggy. And sure enough, in due course Lori's suspicions about something nasty in the woodpile prove to be more than just the product of her over-active imagination. A dead body is found floating in the creek and then a few gold nuggets, and the cats are behaving most peculiarly.... Yes, it's all down to the cats. From Nicodemus (who doesn't catch mice, he just terrifies them) through Catta and Brutus to our hero's own Koko and Yum Yum (who like watching wildlife videos and being read stories by Hans Christian Anderson), this quaint tale of baddies in the backwoods positively purrs with pussyfooting private eyes. Which is not surprising when the author turns out to be doyenne of the unlikely but astonishingly popular genre of feline detective fiction, with a staggering 24 bestselling novels behind her.
