A little sliding index finger moved in a narrow slit made along one edge of the rim. He looked at this curious thing for some time without speaking, and his finger remained on the top of the book which he had slipped into its place. "What doth that strange crystal object here, and whence did it come?" he enquired, and in spite of the tone of his voice being very nearly as usual, I had no difficulty in perceiving that he was interested in my glass pyramid. "'Tis a queer thing that I found in one of the fishers' cabins at Kilkee," I replied. "I gave the fellow a groat for it. He was well satisfied. It was plainly among the treasure trove of the Armada ship. The motto on it is in Spanish." He had taken the object in his hands and was turning it about, full of curiosity. "Know you not what manner of instrument it is?" he asked. "I thought at first, and my father did so also, that it was an instrument of navigation," I replied. "You perceive the graving of the sun, and on the other side the signs of the sun's path. But I have never seen any reference to such an instrument in any book on the astrolabe and such-like implements. Mayhap you can tell us its use, father. You have lived in Spain."
