Smith was an American football player and coach in the United States. His teams were declared the NAIA National Football Champions in 1957 and 1961. Smith was the seventh head football coach for the Pittsburg State Gorillas located in Pittsburg, Kansas and he held that position for 18 seasons, from 1949 until 1966. His coaching record at Pitt State was 116 wins, 52 losses, and 6 ties. As of the conclusion of the 2009 season, this ranks him second at Pitt State in total wins and fourth at the school in winning percentage.
