Excerpt from The Captain of Our Faith
The margin of the revision will give this reading Captain in place of Author. Christianity has its roots in a history. Out of the historical facts in which it is rooted there comes a system of truth often called the faith, and a personal life which is distinctively a life of faith. The word faith in the text may be interpreted in both these ways: first, as belief in the Word or truth Of God; second, as practical confidence in the love of God. In the preceding chapter in which the apostle recites the historical triumphs of faith, both these aspects of it may be constantly found. In the heroes Of the Church in Israel, these elements mingle: accept ance of the Word of God, confidence in the life of God. In these ways, then, we will look at faith.
