In a smokeless combustion furnace in which the fresh fuel is fed from underneath, below the layer of live fuel, the combination with a combustion chamber having a sloped sole, of a. pipe for introducing the fuel into the said chamber, aflue for drawing off the combustion gases, means for forcing the fuel through the said pipe, an air conduit siirroiinding said furnace, openings in the side of the furnace communicating with said conduit for sup lying air to the biirnin fuel and means for operating the fuel f ing device, substantia ly as described. 2. In a smokeless conibustion furnace, in which the fresh fuel is fed from underneath below the layer of live fuel, the combination with a combustion chamber having a sloped sole, of a pipe for introducing the fuel into the said chamber, a flue for drawing ofl"the conibustion gases, means for forcing the fuel through the said pipe, an air conduit surrounding said furance, openings in the side of the fumace for supplying air to the burning fuel, and means for o rating the fuel feeding device, the said sloped sole being form by a conical step grate, substantially as described. 3.
