The purpose of this work is to explore the limitations to human freedom that are imposed upon individuals by the complexity of social relations. The action takes place in the course of a single day. It is precipitated through acts by Satan that provoke a response from each of the succeeding characters in the story. Abel's death is the tragic outcome. The motivation for Cain's act has been well-dissected by many others. No originality is attributed to the proposed relationship in this work between Satan, Eve and Cain. Their relationship is a mere devise for moving the plot in a manner that allows for the exploration of each being's character. More than anything, this rendition of the story is an exercise in the structure of social relations. Each character is both sentient and intellectually complete, and is thus able to fully express the existential concerns that accompany his or her position in the universal order of being. By recreating a day's interactions that result in a dead family member, Cain and Abel exposes the underlying social-structural dynamics that complicate each individual's desire for more
