"Ask her to break it to Phyllis; then call up the coroner, and get rid of the guests." Forsyth, on his way to the door, paused and glanced doubtfully at Massereene and then at the dead man. Leonard read his meaning, and going over to him whispered: "Nothing must be disturbed in this room until the coroner and police arrive. I will remain here until you get back." Forsyth found Mrs. Rutherford, Enid, and Phyllis in the hall grouped about the door. Opening it further, the least possible distance, he slipped through and joined them. "What has happened?" gasped Phyllis, cold fear clutching her heart-strings. "Come upstairs," he answered; his look included them all, and slipping his arm about Phyllis he half carried the terrified girl to her sitting-room on the second floor. Once inside the room he motioned to his wife to close the door, and placed Phyllis on the lounge. "Be brave, dear," and he laid his strong hand caressingly on her shoulder. "What--what--has happened?
