Review Text

Barely-making-it photographer Tony Hines has walked out on his unloving lawyer-wife Evelyn and unprepossessing son Aleric, taking only his clothes and the one thing he cherishes - a painting by his grandmother Angelina Foote. But art-expert Dr. Margaret Dennis is almost positive the picture is really by Frederick Ashe, whose work is much in demand at high prices. She joins Tony when he visits grandma for the first time in 20 years, living in the same house with Grace, the same housekeeper. Angelina tells the story of her intimate years with Ashe - when she copied his every brush-stroke as they painted together, side by side. The result was a cache of some 80 paintings each, stored in her attic until all of Ashe's works were destroyed by her jealous husband. Or were they Angelina's? The remaining 80 are an enigma. But when Grandmother and Grace die soon after Tony's visit, possibly of unnatural causes, Tony, heir to the painting trove, sets out - with Margaret's help - to identify its true creator. This involves reams of tiresome photography lore; several attempts on his life; an unbelievable connection with gangster Renfrew Coombe, whose mirrored mansion hides a squad of goons and a gallery of stolen art, including half a dozen Ashes; and a numbing obsession with boring, repetitive detail. The plot, bizarre even for this author, and a cast of two-dimensional characters with dialogue to match make this one more ordeal than enjoyment. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
