Review Text

More plights of Trothe, the supra-garrulous middleaged gum shoe. (The first book in this suspense-adventure series was reviewed on page 571.) No longer with the British Intelligence Service, Edmund Trothe is now second in command to Paul Chamby, director-general of a company engaged in laying a gas pipeline in southern Arabia. Something there is that doesn't love a lucrative pipeline, a fact made clear to Edmund after a number of untoward incidents designed to ruin the enterprise. High-ranking personnel in the Company are nearly wiped out by some diabolically placed gas pellets; Chamby's secretary is trussed up to starve and/or freeze to death in an out-building; an Arab stockholder is abducted; several ingenious attempts are made on Trothe's life. With the help of adoring mistress Consuela, herself no slouch at sleuthing, Trothe discovers that Chamby, hooked on drugs, had set up Trothe for patsydom. Once Chamby is cached away, Trothe goes after the big fox in this international power-and-money play. Perchance he will get the masterminds in Book III. The author strangles his narrative with a bewildering tangle of actions and characters, endless briefings and summings-up. Over yeasty - Bond bred. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
