Excerpt: ...a pull of IO lb. on the shackle which carries the toothed wheel will enable both racks and weights to be lifted an equal amount, but if a little extra weight be added to one of the racks the movement of that rack will be retarded, whilst the movement of the other one will be accelerated because the combined movement of the two racks is at all times twice as much as that of the shackle which carries the toothed wheel. It will always divide the driving effort evenly, because of the balance lever effect of the-bevel or spur pinions. In this respect the differential acts in much the same way as a whipple tree on a horse-drawn wagon, which ensures that both horses always pull the same, even though one may be dragging behind the other. The wheel and rack form of differential, however, is impracticable on a motor vehicle, so, instead of the racks, straight-toothed wheels or bevel wheels are fitted, but the principle of operation is precisely the same. Final Drive.--The differential gear is sometimes mounted in a separate countershaft, and the final drive taken to the road wheels through chains, whilst in other cases it is enclosed within the back axle case. In the latter type of vehicle, the back axle should be given regular attention, as regards inspection and cleaning, in the same way as the gear-box, the instructions for the latter being equally applicable to the axle. If chains take the final drive they should frequently be cleaned. This can be done by jacking up the wheels, and cleaning them with paraffin and a small brush, afterwards carefully lubricating them with a mixture of blacklead and tallow.
