We called the attention of our readers to this little work last month. We deemed some passages doubtful or objectionable. The author thinks we mistook his meaning, and wishes to guard against misconception. We therefore cheerfully insert the part of his letter which refers to the subject. I am truly sensible of my personal debt, and thank you sincerely for the review of " The Way Home," in " The Btoch or Keys" for February. Your verdict on the book is only too favourable. But your judgment of it as a whole, makes me the more anxious to remove what I feel to be a misconception respecting a part. Doubtless I might have been clearer, and hence your misconception; but I am sure you will be glad to allow me to offer a word of explanation, and so, I trust, correct the misconception. The word Philanthropist, as applied to Christ, was employed by me to express that aspect of His character which all men recognise, which excites the sympathy and admiration of all. This recognition, I hold, may not involve a saving faith in Christ as the God-man--the Philanthropist in His DimsE-spiritual character. My view thus stated will, I think, secure me against misunderstanding. I quite see with you that in the ruLL sense of the word (Titus iii. 4, 5, "the philanthropy of God our Saviour,") "the recognition of Christ as the Philanthropist," is " the recognition of Him as the Way, the Truth, and the Life."
