It is currently considered a subspecies of the gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer). The epithet sayi is in honor of zoologist Thomas Say. Bullsnakes can be found throughout the central United States, northern Mexico, and western Canada. This includes the U.S. states of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin, eastern Washington, and Wyoming.
