Arthur Brisbane in a recent editorial in the New York Journal expressed the opinion that "advertising in the country newspapers, properly utilized, is the most valuable advertising in the world for its cost." You are not "jollying" an advertiser when you tell him that, you are stating plain facts. In the national advertising field there has been more advertising of the buying power of small communities the past two or three years, than at any previous time. You remember Mr. Balmer's very enlightening campaign on this with the Woman's World, --when he argued that the point of diminishing returns had been reached in national publications of mostly city circulation. That campaign gave the start to a tendency to develop the small town market that has been taken up by every publication that could offer that kind of circulation. True, that applied to national media, but it has had a mighty effect on advertisers generally and It brought out many points greatly in favor of advertising In the smaller newspapers and suggests many others that we can follow In limited territory. There may be some interest in a few thoughts about the co-operation that may be secured from an advertising agency. On this I can only speak within the limits of my own experience. Our agency solicits business for state papers by making up lists of papers to reach certain sections. We recommend them as a medium for advertisers who we think can use them to advantage. This work is of course, primarily to make business for ourselves; but if we get the business, the papers get it--and it is missionary work that probably costs more than we can ever get out of it.
