Not illustrated. 1909 edition. Excerpt: ...hydrogen phosphate (NaNHMIPO) stirring the solution, taking care to avoid touching the sides of the beaker with the stirring rod. Allow to stand 12 hours in a cool place, filter, wash with a solution of one part ammonium hydroxide, specific gravity 0.96. Dry, ignite and weigh as magnesium pyrophosphate (MgPOi). Manganese.--Should manganese be present it would be found as manganese pyrophosphate (MmP3Ot) with the magnesium pyrophosphate (Mg3P3O').. In the earlier analyses, manganese was determined accord ing to Presenilis I, p. 294 by adding sodium acetate and an aqueous snlution of bromine, exposing to a temperature of 50 to 70 degrees for a few hours, till the free bromine is all or nearly all expelled from the solution and filtering. The manganese thus precipitated as hydrated dinxide is liable to cnntain sodium salts. It should be washed carefully with hnt water and may be converted by ignition directly into MmO and weighed. If the quantity is considerable, it is dissolved in hydrochloric acid and converted into some nther suitable form for weighing. Sulphuric Acid and the Alkalies.--Heat the other filtrate from the silicious matter to boiling and add an excess of a solution of barium chloride, a drop at a time, with constant stirring. Allow to remain in a warm place for at least thirty minutes, stirring at intervals. Filter, ignite, and weigh as barium sulphate, (BaSO-). Compare Fresenius, 1, p. 434. Sodium and Potassium.--Evaporate the filtrate from the barium sulphate to dryness, add water, heat to boiling and treat the boiling solution with slight excess of alkali free barium hydroxide, Ba(0H)3. Filter and add to the filtrate ammonium carbonate and ammonia. Filter off the precipitate sn obtained, evaporate the filtrate to dryness in a...
