The American elm is our ideal shade tree where conditions are favorable for growth Along country roadsides, in fertile meadow-lands, on the banks of streams and rivers, and in other moist, well-drained places the elm will make a luxuriant growth. The general planting of the elm, however, for street purpose is attended with considerable risk on ac-count of many insect enemies. But where soil and other conditions are favorable and provisions are made for preserv-ing the elms after planting, this specie of shade tree should not be omitted in the list selected for village or city planting.
