The speaker made frequent reference to blackboard illustrations, a number of which were provided, and, in addition, had distributed among his hearers samples of each of the tickets and cards employed in the system. DURING the past few years development of the various projects of distributing power from central stations has been unusually rapid, and experience has proved, very conclusively in some cases, that notwith standing the heavy cost of construction and the expense of maintenance of such plants there is still a fair margin for profit. Steam and hydraulic po wer systems afford familiar examples of what can be done in this line of enterprise, and their success has in a great measure encouraged the undertaking of other work involving the same general principles. Thus in England the idea of supplying compressed air on a large scale for power purposes has at last taken practical shape, and after many efforts the Birmingham Compressed Air Power Co. have been launched. The project is the first of its kind, although in a modified form it has been repeatedly carried out, and the arrangements for supplying the power, which, according to available accounts, are pioceeding satisfactorily, will therefore be watched with much interest. The advantages which the scheme offers will immediately suggest themselves, especially where power is required for domestic service, and the fact that they are appreciated is well shown by the number of applications for supply--amounting to nearly 4000 horsepower--which the company have already received.
