Review Text

Cowboy and Indian are friends, then foes, then friends again, as each realizes "If I'd had someone to help me" the one horse both dreamed of could have been captured - and it is. At the close of the book, a return to the opening: "Every seventh day. . . they would sit and sing a song or two and smoke the peace pipe. Sometimes they would exchange stories - unbelievable stories. . . Last of all. . . of how, together, they had caught the red horse. . . that. . . galloped like the wind and was as strong as a mountain lion." Hieroglyphs annexed to names and key nouns (forest, stream, setting sun) allow reading along or re-reading by rebus, and echo the pictures - decisively colored proto-primitive plane figures. Very level, very placid, not very original. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
