From 1593 till 1860 there was constant and sometimes bitter rivalry between the two institutions, so that the numer ous proposals for union which came after the flame of theological and social strife to which the younger college owed its birth had died away to mere embers all came to naught until the two universities were fused by a parlia mentary commission in 1860.
