Virus Structure A neutron diffraction study of tobacco mosaic virus has been initiated. The virus does not crystallize but can form colloidal solutions in which all the rod-shaped particles are nearly parallel. Such "oriented sols" have been extensively studied with x rays. The diffraction of neutrons perpendicular to the particle axis has been studied and four peaks have been recorded. These peaks, in conjunction with x-ray data, provide information about the average structure of the virus at different radii. Flax Pond, an estuary connected by a single channel to Long Island Sound. Measurements of the dissolved carbon content of waters flowing through the channel show that for much of the year the estuary removes carbon compounds from the waters of the Sound. Ecology Terrestrial ecosystems, especially the oak-pine forest of central Long Island, continue to be the focus of research on the ecological effects of ionizing radiation, on the metabolism of forests, and on nutrient cycling. A new program of estuarine research was designed to determine the role of estuaries in the biosphere. The field site for the new program is Flax Pond, an estuary on the north shore of Long Island. Indications are that the estuary is an extremely rich nursery for fish and a center of high metabolism that is supported for much of the year by a net flux of organic matter into the estuary from Long Island Sound. Another program was designed to examine the possibilities for recovering the nutrients and water from sewage by use of terrestrial or aquatic eco systems.
