Her king can now be benefited by no political warnings; but his fate exhibits a dreadful lesson to the potentates of the earth, on which they cannot too frequently nor too deeply meditate. He has seen the jewels of his crown drop off in rapid succession, and he has the mortification to reflect, that he has been the artificer of his own ruin. In his youth he exhibited that monster in politics, a revolutionary Heir-apparent! and he fatigued his father and his people with speculative reforms that irritated the turbulence they could not gratify. In the Council of May, 1796, his advice fatally determined the good old king to that peace which delivered all Italy to France. The Duke d'Aoste, his brother, gave his opinion for defending the citadels of Piedmont to the last extremity, that the Austrians might have time to rally. This counsel, at once wise and salutary, was rejected; the old distrusts and prejudices of the Court of Turin against Austria prevailed over the dangers of a peace with a regicide Republic--they threw themselves into the talons of the monster, who, after sporting with their terrors and anguish for two years, has finally devoured his victims! Thus widely triumphant, by force or fraud, destructive war, or infinitely more destructive peace, the Directory looked round, and saw but one enemy opposed to them. Great Britain they had neither been able to deceive nor injure: equally transported, therefore, by cupidity and rage, by envy and despair, they directed all their efforts against her.
