Review Text

A successor- and a sequel- to The Fair Field (1946), this tells of Brensham Village which borders on the Elmbury of that book, and is again leisurely, literary reminiscence of that part of England. Here, briefly, episodically, are the figures best remembered:- the mad Lord Orris and his declining days of poverty; the hermit who lived in the hill tower; rector and schoolmaster; peachers and keepers; Billy Butcher, the town drunk; here are the seasons and holidays- the cricket team- the three pube and darts- the vulgar encroachment of the syndicate- and the village's reluctance to change, even with war. Modest, modulated portrait- with conventionalized charm. (Kirkus Reviews)
