We now direct his attention to those habitual movements of the arms and feet which are intended to supple them and remove any appearance of stiffness, and at the same time enable him to put in a blow the more unexpectedly. These arm movements will be practiced in the following manner: Move the arms to and fro so that the one goes forward while the other comes back, following straight lines through the centre. Observe that the left hand makes a much greater movement than the right, but not to full extent, always keeping the same in front of and below the right. It should not turn much during the movement, the thumb remaining uppermost, both wrist joints held so that the flsts point at the object. The movements of the feet are to be executed in connection with those of the arms as follows; Use the arm motion as explained above, and at those times when the left arm extends, move the left foot forward as if to step, but without advancing the body much, touching the ground only with the toe. Then withdraw it, at the same time drawing the left hand back. The left foot should not, however, approach closely to the right. In practicing this by yourself you may use two or three of these deceptive movements and then really step forward and strike a blow. As the motions are similar to those of attack, an opponent will mistake the latter for one of the former. In a similar manner you may use short advance steps for the purpose of closing up when your opponent gives way, and when he advances you will use short retreat steps to preserve always the proper distance.
