Review Text

Very specialized bird musicology which attempts "to reckon seriously with the totality of songs by the 5,000 or more species that could, without stretching the term to the utmost, be said to 'sing'." A nigh on to impossible task, reports Hartshorne, but he gives it that old academic try, from the New Zealand Tuis' low-pitched warbles to the Olive Whistler's "peeee-poooo" trill. The songsters are scientifically ranked, measured, spectrogrammed, and related. Ornithologists will croon. (Kirkus Reviews)
