Review Text

American theologian Walter Wangerin has set himself a challenging task. He tells the story of the tribes of Israel and Judah from Abraham to the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. His source is the Bible, his style immediate and contemporary but with a biblical tilt. Discarding repetition and long genealogical lists he brings the well-known stories alive, keeping a sense of growth and purpose at the heart of a dramatic chronicle that ends by setting the story of the Messiah in an accessible historical context. This is a book that should make many readers want to re-read the bible, although the author's cuts and embellishments may offend some traditionalists. This remarkable book might take off like Sophie's World. (Kirkus UK)show more
