Review Text

When the magic seeds of the Bongleweed turn neatly manicured Pew Gardens into a tropical thicket overnight, the riotous efflorescence taps an unsuspected streak of anarchy in Becky Finch - who dares to anticipate "the whole valley cocooned" as the "unrepentantly, wickedly beautiful" weed makes its way towards "Brum in the North and London in the South." Even Becky's father, who has previously dedicated himself to keeping Pew's plantings well in hand, is caught up in the excitement and decides that the weed is "nature" and therefore must be allowed to take its erratic course. The Bongleweed is not nature at all, but just the sort of fanciful artifice that springs up one day and disappears the next to the delight of other Beckys who can enjoy the confusion and profusion without asking why. Not all children will be able to keep pace with the staccato dialogue (not to mention the continual "daresays" and other Briticisms), but Cresswell's early blooming readers will thrive on this hybrid of cultivated wit and audacious imagination.
