Review Text

During the Bicentennial Year, lawyer Phil Trimble unexpectedly received permission from the government of Nepal to make an ascent of Everest. He immediately contacted two lawyer friends who were members of the American Alpine Club, and a woman friend, and these four amateurs - none of whom had ever climbed a really big mountain - helped gather a still larger team that finally made the climb. It was under-financed until CBS-TV, still glorying in the Tall Ships regatta in New York harbor, decided to push the Bicentennial spirit and film the attempt. We follow the dangerous climb through bad weather and leeches and mud to a final base camp. Along the way, as Ridgeway gets to know the Sherpas, consuming strong drink with them in the evenings, the personalities of the guides - and of his fellow team members - are revealed. One of the two women along feels very put upon and recognizes, resentfully, that she will not be allowed to make the big push to the summit on either of the small teams chosen for the effort. As supplies dwindle and the climbers experience depression from lack of oxygen, the outcome is in doubt. But at last two members strike out and make it. Then they are seemingly lost, stranded in a wind storm at the summit. Will they make it down? The expedition accomplished little by way of records, but it did get two men on top - and gave many of the others a new view of their lives. Animated but not memorable. (Kirkus Reviews)
