Review Text

The journey of Chiang Ti and Jade Lotus - to ask the enchantress why their caged bird no longer sings - begins amid the blue and white serenity of a Ming porcelain landscape. In return for small acts of kindness they are joined by a tortoise, a cat and a rain dragon who help them defeat the magisterial, winged enchantress when, coveting the bird, she threatens to send a storm to destroy them all. The tortoise grows to the size of a sheltering mountain, the cat becomes large enough to devour the enchantress, and the rain dragon sends a magic shower which dissolves the evil spell and causes the landscape to bloom into a shower of neo-impressionistic foliage. The slight story serves mostly to tie together the delicate panoramas - highly stylized but handsomely stylish just the same. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
