Review Text

A WW II ammunition ship that sank in the Thames carrying thousands of tons of aerial fragmentation bombs has been lying in thirty feet of water ever since. Now London is being blackmailed by an extortionist who has placed a remote-controlled underwater bomb in the wreck and threatens to blow up the city with the largest non-nuclear explosion in history. Superintendent Bucken of the Yard's Special Branch is torn from his girlfriend's leg-lock in bed to go after the villain - who has announced his identity and home address! He's bloody fearless, suave as a tailor's dummy. Ah, but he's only a pawn, it seems, being manipulated himself by "the Principal." Barlay maneuvers Bucken through several Maltese Falcon ploys (the deceptive sweetheart, the murdered crony-detective who must be avenged, and others) before exposing corruption in the Yard's highest offices. Curiously awful (and offensive) writing mixed with a high-intensity plot of undeniable zap. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
