Review Text

Neil Boyd's recollections of his beleaguered days as a very green young curate in a working-class London parish, c. 1950, are rich in gentle self-mockery and as kindly as any Father O'Malley could wish. When not ministering to his always surprising flock ("Bless me father, for I am a sin," said a diminutive penitent), Boyd plays straight man to Fr. Duddleswell, a parish priest well versed in the delicate arts of lying, cheating, and "Biblical blackmail" for the greater glory of God and the parish coffers. Duddleswell is a genuinely wily and entertaining old buzzard who specializes in trouncing the letter of the holy writ to preserve the spirit. When the all-important parish bazaar ends in a calamitous downpour, Boyd discovers that the silver lining is lucrative indeed: Fr. Duddleswell's "rain insurance," including a 20-1 bet with the local bookies, yields no less than 1,200 pounds clear profit. Boyd's quiet, sure sense of irony and the hard-nosed barbs of Mrs. Pring, a quintessential British housekeeper, keep the whimsy in decent bounds. Clerical shenanigans for the reader who likes his heavenly instruction with a few grains of worldly salt. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
