In referring to the subject of liberty, the Congressman, among other things, said: Human progress cannot be made when the hands of citizens are shackled by retrogressive and autocratic government. Freedom in matters of government, freedom in the home, freedom of religion and freedom of action for inventive genius have made possible the development in this nation of which we are so proud. Attention was called to the limit that we have gone in personal liberty by the telling of the following incident: One night in one of our cities a radical speaker reviled the American flag and went on to say that that flag shielded corruption, labor is crushed under the iron heel of capitalism, etc. The speaker was Interrupted and a quiet voice at the edge of the crowd said: "Yes, Mr. Speaker; and another thing, that is the only flag in all the world under whose folds you would be permitted to make that speech abusing the flag and the government that protects you."
