To this work he devoted ten years, with gratifying success, and during that period he married Miss Roberts, of Hancock county, who died two years after her marriage, leaving one child, which died in infancy. His business career in Denmark dates from 1866, at which time he returned to this place and engaged in a mercantile enterprise in company with George Epps, under the firm name of Epps & Blackinton, they conducting a general store for two and a half years, at the expiration of which period Mr. Blackinton sold his interest in the business. In 1870 he again became engaged in the business in partnership with Dr. A. Holland, the firm being known as Blackinton & Holland, and this connection was continued until 1884, when Dr. Holland disposed of his interest to Peter Sheric, and after seven years during which the firm bore the style of Blackinton & Company, Mr. Blackinton purchased Mr. Sheric's holdings in 1891. Since that date he has been the sole proprietor, and by his ability, tact, close attention to detail and well-known character of honesty, integrity and strict justice in all his dealings has succeeded in securing a very large and profitable patronage. The stock is a general one and among the largest and most complete in the county of its kind, and here Mr. Blackinton also conducts a small banking business for the benefit of his patrons and friends, an institution which has proved of great convenience to residents of the surrounding territory.
