Batt's wit turned chiefly in playing upon the Doctor's verses. The printer's Preface to the first edition is signed T. A. Gough (in a ms. Note) says there was an earlier edition in folio, of eight pages. John Speed, M.D., of Southampton, the reputed author, was grandson of the historian.
