When millions sufier, the charity of a few foreigners is worse than useless, for it can but prolong the agony of some. How I wish that at times like this the churches of the world could unitefin prayer for this miserable land! Our own prayers, like our power to help, seem inadequate! Another serious matter is the great financial crisis in Tientsin and Peking. Over seventy of the most reliable native banks in the North have smashed, and in Tientsin the troops arelordered out to prevent rioting. High and low are alike aB'ected, and the trade of the North is almost at a standstill. The viceroy has tried in vain to relieve the situation, and the condition of trade and of the people is growing daily worse. I shall hope later to write you more fully of the situation in the North, which is about as bad as it can be for the people themselves. If the dreaded cholera visits us again this year as it did last year, in epidemic form, what with trade stagnant, famine abroad, and money out of circulation, the portion of the Chinese will be too horrible for pen to describe. And yet cholera is already beginning to appear! This is a rather dismal letter, I fear, but we can think of little else than the sufferings that are all around us', and in writing we can but speak of the pitiable condition of those whom we came to help.
