But, granting it were so, still, our field is the world, and our work knows no limits less extensive than that. Again, it may be said, that many persons, as members of missionary societies, are doing their part to encourage the circulation of the Scriptures. lt is true, that a great, and good, and most wonderful work is being done by the missionaries of the various churches, who not only circulate the Scriptures as they preach the gospel, but make the translations which the Bible Society publishes. But, for all that, the claims of the Bible Society are first and paramount, and can never be ignored by any one who has at heart the evangelization of the world. For, not only does the Bible Society furnish the missionary with his weapons of warfare, but itself leads the van of missionary enterprise. And again, while the missionary societies, as organs of the different denominations of Christians, by their rivalry, tend indirectly to keep alive our dissensions; on the broad platform of the Bible Society, " To encourage the wider circulation of the Holy Scriptures without note or comment," we are enabled to recognize the fact, that we are indeed all united in one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. We can have no hesitation, then, in saying that every member of the church of Christ should be a member of the Bible Society. For how can the humblest Christian do less than aid in the dissemination of the Scriptures, or what grander work can employ the greatest talents?
