The Jews seek after a sign, and not the Jews only, but Christians also, for this sin is as old as man, and as wide as the world. Eve was a religious sign-seeker; she let Satan deceive her through her senses; she thought to get good by a wrong way. "And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her." From that day to this, there have been religious sign-seekers, those who seek for the spiritual in the sensible, or who make an end of what ought to be a means. Religious sign-seeking is a symptom of a deep need in human nature; it is the cry of man for heart satisfaction; but it is a mistaken cry, or a cry that seeks to be answered in a wrong way. What should we think of one who wished to reach a certain town, taking the road in the exactly opposite direction? But this is what "religious sign-seekers" are doing.
