Review Text

Mr. Rosenthal is a poet of great flexibility, versatility, deftness. He possesses a taste and elegance that seem beyond criticism, with very few exceptions. The thirty-odd poems presented here range from love poems (especially "Love Wrapped Mc In Darkness" and "Returning") to powerful public poems ("Beyond Power: A Sequence" should be required reading for political activists who write verse). A pair of fine prose poems, two unlike elegies, and at least one really funny poem "Love in the Luncheonette" also appear. If the other humorous poems don't work in America as well as in England, or if the children's poems seem strained, no matter: there is more than enough delight in the silky surface of "Love Song" with its unaffected use of the "thou." "Into the Mirror" surely must be one of Rosenthal's finest poems, an indivisible meld of structure, diction, pace and imagery, where love as a mirror - an old metaphor - becomes the starting point for a high speed train trip through the Norfolk broads, through the poet's sensibility, into the "unground centre" of an erotic love at once abstracted and immediate, remembered, anticipated, and very presently felt.
