Review Text

Beyond the din of Realpolitik assailing the rest of us in these difficult times, the venerable octogenarian critic and semanticist I. A. Richards still hears the lovely strains of metaphysics. Richards, author of The Meaning of Meaning (with C. K. Ogden), Practical Criticism, How to Read a Page, and, more recently, several collections of poetry, describes these musings on the Beyond as "a dramatic entertainment." Therefore these nine essays (concerning such matters as divine authority and justice in the Iliad, the Book of Job, the Republic, The Divine Comedy, Prometheus Unbound) are not "essays" but "scenes" wherein these our spiritual ancestors confront one another. "Not my remarks on them but forces from the works themselves. . . shape the plot. I am not primarily discussing these immeasurable beings. I am trying to invite them to speak for themselves." Be prepared for some high-flying maundering. This is intellectual mysticism of a high order - with no less than Blake's vision of Eden for a finale. We were well entertained and astonished by Richards' erudition. Still, we like our literary criticism palpable. (Kirkus Reviews)
