Review Text

Mme. Sarraute continues her unique and supra-fine probe of the root nerve of artistic creation by writing a novel about the writing of a novel and the author's generative career. The literary artist's struggle with form, with words that can either determine ego-content or cannibalize it, while cosmically significant to the author himself, is for the onlooker a Lilliputian contest and undeniably amusing, or so it appears to Mme. Sarraute. At the brink of creation, the author is caught in a nasty little Wonderland of his own where incredible and fanciful encounters take place. The "predetermined" young writer contemplates words like building blocks for cathedrals. Then come the many "style" variations: words that shimmer in chance and ordered arrangements; long vowels emanating from - of all things - human throats; the flaccid demands for communication; the search for a "live core." Publication leads to a backward glance for lost relevance, and the author's way is an enervating journey through an alluvial swamp. To be sure there are blanks that evidence themselves after the trademark of "excellence," but "have no fear, the blanks. . . will be full to bursting," since no one will hold his power to account. A small and special tour de force. (Kirkus Reviews)
