Bennett Johnston, is an American lobbyist who was a Democratic Party politician and United States Senator from Louisiana from 1972 to 1997. Johnston was born to Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Johnston, Sr., in Shreveport and graduated from C.E. Byrd High School there. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. He served in the United States Army, Judge Advocate General Corps in the former West Germany from 1956 to 1959. Johnston's father was also an attorney involved in Louisiana politics. In February 1952, the senior Johnston appeared in Minden, the seat of Webster Parish in north Louisiana, to speak on behalf of the gubernatorial candidacy of Judge Carlos G. Spaht of Baton Rouge, who thereafter lost the Democratic runoff election to Robert F. Kennon, a Minden resident who was elected governor that year
