The Beauty of Disaster
This book was written as I watched the twin towers fall on television, alone in a sunny apartment, as I watched the bombs fall over Baghdad with the insane glow of fireworks on starry Montevideo nights, as I saw salmon swimming upstream in the waters of Alaska, and beaten Indian cruise ship workers sailing to Maui on their day off, for a glimpse of paradise. It is a book full of the darkness of the world at the time, and the beauty that surrounds us. It is tainted everywhere by my first unreal impressions of America, the vast, beautiful, and terrible dreamland, as it was during the first years of the 21st century.
