Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ...Normal School, Hyannis, May 27th, the section on education was in charge of the Commission. Mrs. Mary E. S. Root, children's librarian of the Providence Public Library, gave a demonstration on "Teaching children to use library tools." Mrs. Root gave the same demonstration at the Normal School in Bridgewater the following day. At Hyannis about one hundred and fifty were present, representing libraries from Wellfleet to Wood's Hole. The Agent of the Commission was in attendance for conference with librarians and trustees. Miss Sadie St. Clair, assistant at Williams College Library for three years, has accepted a position as cataloguer at the Redwood Library, Newport, R. I. The Public Library Commission in co-operation with the Old South Association made an experiment during the month of April of having lectures in Italian in public libraries, as far as possible, in the hope of interesting the foreign colony in the libraries. Mr. Pecorini, an educated Italian and at one time editor of an Italian paper in New York, "I1 Cittadino," was engaged to lecture five times a week and instructed to speak on the "Advantages for Italians in America," covering the necessity of their learning English, attending evening schools, keeping their children in school as long as possible, using the public libraries, and taking out their naturalization papers, if they had decided to remain in this country, all of which he explained in a very acceptable manner. The two lectures given in the Old South Meeting House were historical, "Old Boston" and "Boston of today."
