Review Text

Based on an actual incident in the Scapa Flow, this is a crashingly bloody, bluidy episode in which the destroyer Glowworm, orphan ship of a flotilla, torpedoed and rammed a German heavy cruiser in a reciprocally devastating fashion. Below the crew are looking for the "one real scrap" they'll get after the long "dirty, dreary slog"; above the other commanders and particularly well-weathered Flag Officer Whitehorn mistrust the Glowworm's Captain, an odd, hapless sort or perhaps even a hooded jinx. Forrester's book becomes a long descriptive inset of the single action and its carnage, often running to viscous (over)writing. But for some, say the Douglas Reeman readers, it will have an unquestionable grim and stentorian excitement. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
