Review Text

A battery of facts about bats: their unusual anatomy, their sensitive hearing, their dwelling habits (there's no place like home), their family life (without father), their varieties (including the vampire, not as bad as its name), their uses (guano for fertilizer, bat suicide squads to carry bombs). Questions remained unanswered - why do bats dwell in the dark?-and interconnections are minimal; the sentence structure is repetitious and the illustrations are sketchy approximations. Ripper (Bats) has a simpler, shorter text, Brauner (Silent Visitor) is more immediate and imaginative, and both have better illustrations; this is simply a useful assemblage of information for the middle grades.
