Review Text

Carl Wilcox, aging ne'er-do-well and son of a hotel owner in seedy Depression-era Corden, So. Dakota (The Fourth Widow, The Naked Liar), again plays sleuth - this time because Corden's only cop is down with pneumonia. . .and because a corpse has been found amid a gathering blizzard: old Arthur Foote, a local quasi-bum, has been brutally strangled to death with barbed wire. Foote's estranged children arrive at the hotel: sexy Kitty, with a ruthless sugar daddy in tow; AWOL sailor Buff. Then, while Kitty and Carl (a legendary womanizer) rekindle their old flame, other suspects surface - including radio evangelist Gaylord Plant and his estranged son Gregory, who soon becomes murder victim #2. And Carl starts uncovering the layers of secrets in the Foote-family past that have led to all this mayhem: the truth about the paternity of Kitty and Buff, whose comely mother Azalea married old Foote for convenience's sake; the truth about the death of Azalea and her third child in a fire a dozen or so years ago. Sturdy if familiar American gothic - deepened by the recurring theme of father/son estrangement (hero Carl is also at odds with his dad, a dying tyrant), nicely shaded with small-town winter atmosphere, and wisely leavened with Carl's earthy, laconic humor.
