Review Text

Another quirkily engaging, ultimately disappointing psycho-mystery from a past master of the form. Annamay Hyatt, little princess-daughter of wealthy West Coast parents, disappears from her grandiose playhouse, and her corpse is found a few months later in the woods - an apparent victim of some local psycho. So Annamay's father Howard (whose marriage is crumbling) teams up with minister Michael Dunlop to track down the culprit. And the suspects seem to include: Annamay's young "Uncle Ben," an architect and family-friend who has been awfully obsessed with the Hyatts; a colorfully deranged ex-brothel-madam who lives nearby, hates children, and has been dictating her bizarre memoirs; a tambourine-playing tramp in the area called Mr. Cassandra; and even Annamay's slightly addled grandfather, her distinctly miserable mother, and devoted housekeeper Chizzy (an odd sort prone to over-baking). But, though prime suspicion falls on architect Ben when he drives his car off a cliff, the solution lies elsewhere. . . with a let-down (neither really surprising nor especially convincing) of a windup. And Millar fans will have to be content with the jaunty, offbeat character sketches here - which may not lead anywhere in particular but do provide breezily rewarding diversion.
