Review Text

This is the second novel in the grand design which will be called Destiny of Eagles - one of those crashingly noisy and crushingly active picaresque affairs somewhere between Angelique and Horn-blower. Mr. Carnegie is a very physical writer and "black torsos streaming with sweat, teeth gleaming in snarls of rage, fear, frantic effort" are never still a minute. This time his Polish hero Henry Barinski, who has unwillingly deserted The Banners of Love (1968) and his Kasia, finds himself in Siberia - out cold in the snow. After he is salvaged by two fur trappers, he ships aboard the British Huntress where he spends three years and seven months and to which Mr. Carnegie devotes most of this installment. It's a long crossing, bloody, windy, thirsty - perhaps read about during one of those White Nights far from the Arctic Circle where this starts off. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
