Description

for SSATB unaccompanied Harrap's inventive and dramatic setting of the well-known Eucharist hymn text provides a contemporary alternative to more familiar versions by Byrd, Mozart, and Elgar. In five unaccompanied and often interweaving parts, with meandering chromatic harmonies, Ave verum corpus is both challenging and rewarding to sing. The motet's striking scalic passages, effective word painting and overall contrast to the other well-known settings will be welcomed by singers and listeners alike. Particularly suitable for Holy Communion and the Feast of Corpus Christi.show more

Review quote

Harrap's music is largely built from ornamented diatonic scales, easier to sing than it sounds or looks on the page. * James L. Montgomery, Sunday by Sunday, December 2012 * Harrap's setting of Ave Verum Corpus though makes the stronger impression, with its intricate vocal figurations and unpredictable harmonic direction which none the less, by careful design, bring the motet triumphantly and logically home. * Matthew Greenall, The Singer, May 2011 *show more
