Description

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Australian Transport Network is a former freight railway operator of Australia. The company operated narrow gauge trains in Tasmania, and standard gauge trains on the Australian mainland. On the mainland they operated under the name ATN Access. In 1997 Wisconsin Central Transportation formed a consortium to acquire TasRail. It held a one third interest, with Tranz Rail holding the remainder. Tranz Rail itself consisted of three shareholders: merchant bankers Fay, Richwhite & Company and Berkshire Partners as well as Wisconsin Central Railway. TasRail was the former Tasmanian Government Railways, and was part of the Federal Government's Australian National Railways Commission which was in the middle of privatisation. In February 2004 the much larger Pacific National bought ATN, with the purchase not opposed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.show more
