Review Text

Australia is both an ancient and very youthful country, and it's eclectic mix of migrants and indigenous peoples has been embraced and expressed through the visual arts. Painting might be accused of being in it's death throws in Europe but not so in Australia. The Aborginal inheritance of earth-ochre colours and dancing patterns are clear in the work of John Olsen and his heir apparent David Rankin, and given an eastern twist in Savanhdary Vongpoothorn's giddying canvases. In contrast Louise Hearman's beautifully executed romantic landscapes nod to a different, Western tradition and contain dark and disturbing narratives. Australian Painting Now celebrates the vibrancy and heat - literal and artistic - of this fabulous country. Over 70 artists are represented in an uncluttered and informative way, with 160 beautiful plates. (Kirkus UK)show more
